The Guymon Municipal Airport and the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics (ODAA) marked the start of construction on a new 120-foot by 100-foot hangar with a recent groundbreaking ceremony .

The construction is a core initiative of the ODAA Statewide Hangar Program, an effort led by the ODAA to address a shortage of hangar space, stimulate economic growth, increase revenue-generating storage at airports, and expand aviation business opportunities across the state.

The estimated $2.3 million project is funded through a collaborative partnership with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) contributing about $1.3 million, the ODAA providing about $920,000 and the local airport sponsor covering the remaining $115,000.

“With Guymon’s upcoming hangar construction, we’re strategically addressing the need to improve access to essential hangar space in Oklahoma’s panhandle,” said Grayson Ardies, Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics executive director. “By supporting more traffic and encouraging longer stays, we are directly boosting the airport’s revenue potential and overall vitality.”

Micheal W. Shannon, Guymon city manager, agreed, highlighting the importance of future growth.

“The construction of our new transient hangar marks a major milestone for the Guymon Municipal Airport and for the continued growth of our community. This facility gives us the ability to safely accommodate jet aircraft, support business travel, and attract new economic opportunities to the region. It’s an investment in our future—one that enhances our infrastructure, strengthens our local economy, and ensures Guymon remains a competitive and welcoming destination for aviation.”

The improvement is administered through ODAA’s five-year revolving Airport Construction Program (ACP), which is provided in cooperation with the FAA and airport sponsors. The ACP’s core mission is to support the combined goal of developing and maintaining a robust statewide airport system essential for Oklahoma’s business, transportation, and commerce. More information regarding the ACP is available within the airports section on the ODAA website at oklahoma.gov/aerospace.

Guymon Municipal Airport, established in 1949, sits on 480 acres and serves as the largest public airport in the Oklahoma Panhandle area. It features two runways: Runway 18/36 (5,900 feet long by 100 feet wide) and Runway 06/24 (1,795 feet long by 200 feet wide). The airport is currently home to 31 based aircraft and sees about 19,000 take-offs and landings each year.
