Google going BIG in Texas with new data centers

Google announces new $40 billion investment in Texas

Massive Expansion Underscores Texas Role in AI and Energy

Google has announced a sweeping $40 billion investment in Texas, signaling one of the largest single-state expansions in the company’s history. The new spending dwarfs the $9 billion the company recently committed to Oklahoma, where it is building three new data centers in Pryor, Stillwater, and Muskogee.

With this move, Texas strengthens its position as a national leader in data infrastructure and AI-driven energy innovation. The Lone Star State already hosts 411 operational data centers, second only to Virginia in total number nationwide.

Three New Data Centers and Energy Projects Planned

New Haskell County Campus Will Include Solar and Battery Storage

One of Google’s newly announced data centers will be located in Haskell County, just north of Abilene. The project includes plans for an onsite solar farm and battery storage facility, designed to reduce strain on the state’s electric grid while maintaining reliable power for AI workloads.

The renewable integration reflects Google’s broader goal of operating on carbon-free energy 24/7 by 2030, an initiative that extends across its growing AI and cloud infrastructure footprint.

Announcement Highlights Workforce and Energy Efficiency Goals

Pichai and Abbott Tout Texas as AI Hub

The announcement was made by Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who was joined by Texas Governor Greg Abbott during an event in Midlothian, one of the state’s emerging tech corridors.

“Texas is the epicenter of AI development, where companies can pair innovation with expanding energy,” said Governor Abbott.
“Google’s $40 billion investment makes Texas Google’s largest investment in any state in the country and supports energy efficiency and workforce development in our state. We must ensure that America remains at the forefront of the AI revolution, and Texas is the place where that can happen.”

Regional Energy and Infrastructure Implications

Google’s commitment to Texas comes as data centers and AI computing demand surge, pushing state regulators and utilities to modernize grid infrastructure and expand renewable capacity.

The addition of new solar and battery systems alongside massive computing campuses positions Google as a key participant in Texas’ evolving energy ecosystem, complementing investments in power reliability and grid resilience amid record industrial growth.

In comparison, Google’s $9 billion investment in Oklahoma—which includes expansion in Pryor and new sites in Stillwater and Muskogee—illustrates a regional focus on energy innovation across the Southern Plains.
