Yukon City leaders are defending their business deal with a company that wants to locate a data center in the city and at the same time attempting to assure residents over their concerns.

After recently selling 184.5 acres of city land for $15.8 million to a renewable energy developer in Atlanta, Georgia, the city council was criticized by residents who expressed concerns about the impact a data center might have on city water supplies.

“You have our word. We’re not going to put the city of Yukon in jeopardy of losing potable water or rates going up,” declared City Manager Jeff Deckard at a recent Yukon Chamber Legislative Breakfast, according to the Yukon Progress.

Mayor Brian Pillmore had stated at a recent city council meeting the developer planned a $1 billion data center. Residents remained dissatisfied and expressed their doubts at the most recent council meeting.

One woman, identified as Anita Montgomery, even distributed to council members copies of an OK Energy Today newsletter which pointed to various data center issues around the nation.
