Xcel Energy Cancels Amarillo Solar Farm Plan
Energy provider Xcel Energy has canceled its plans to build a massive 1,400-acre solar farm near Amarillo, Texas, following vocal opposition from nearby residents. The project, known as Oneida 2 Solar, was expected to cost nearly $600 million and begin construction in 2027.
The solar facility was one of eight new generation projects submitted by Xcel’s subsidiary, Southwestern Public Service Company, to the Public Utility Commission of Texas earlier this month. The utility’s $10 billion regional expansion plan aimed to meet a projected 40% increase in summer electricity demand over the next five years across Texas and New Mexico.
Community Pushback Leads to Project Halt
Local officials confirmed the cancellation after nearby homeowners expressed strong concerns about property values, land use, and environmental impact. Residents of the Rolling Hills neighborhood — located directly next to the proposed solar site — argued the massive development would disrupt their community and reduce open land access.
Potter County Commissioner Brian Dennard told KVII TV News the company formally decided not to move forward after multiple rounds of public meetings and feedback.
“This is a big win for our community,” he said, noting that Xcel appeared responsive to local concerns.
Utility Still Plans Major Energy Expansion
Despite the setback, Xcel remains committed to regional energy growth. The company’s latest proposal includes 17 new power generation projects and extensions of existing capacity totaling more than 5,100 megawatts of new energy.
That portfolio features 3,200 megawatts of dispatchable generation and energy storage, along with 1,968 megawatts of wind and solar installations across Texas and New Mexico. Together, these projects are expected to bolster system reliability, support economic development, and strengthen the region’s grid.
Xcel has not indicated whether it plans to relocate the canceled Amarillo project or substitute it with another renewable facility.
