Oklahoma regulators will continue their study this week of the possible development of nuclear energy in the state with a Tuesday afternoon technical conference.
The Corporation Commission’s Public Utility Division will present the conference as commissioners meet at 1:30 p.m. It will be the only topic for the meeting, according to the agenda.
“Case No. GD2025-000004, In re: Inquiry of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission to Study the Technical and Legal Feasibility of Nuclear Energy Generation in Oklahoma, for
a technical conference led by the Public Utility Division.”
The commission continues receiving public comments regarding the study that was required under a bill passed by the legislature and signed into law. Some are succinct in their comments
“No to nuclear,” was the only comment from one Oklahoman.
“We do not need nuclear power in Oklahoma. This is a problem and we don’t need it,” wrote another.
Rebecca Jim, Director of LEAD based in Miami wrote her opposition too. LEAD is an environmental group and stands for Local Environmental Action Demanded. She and Earl Hatley, President of LEAD signed a letter opposing any nuclear development in the state.
“While I understand the desire to diversity energy sources in Oklahoma, nuclear energy is not a viable, sustainable, or safe solution for Oklahoma residents,” stated the two LEAD officers. They encouraged the Corporation Commission to “cease pursuit of nuclear energy in Oklahoma.”
“For Oklahoma specifically, which currently generates approximately 50% of its electricity from natural gas and 42% from wind as of 2024, nuclear energy could provide a pathway to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining grid reliability. Oklahoma produces almost three times more energy than it consumes, ranking eighth in the nation in total energy production, and advanced nuclear generation could enhance the state’s position as a net energy exporter while reducing
environmental impact.”
The firm contended that nuclear power plants would provide a stable and be a continuous source of electricity and enhance energy security in the state.
Below is the agenda for the nuclear meeting.
