Leadership Addition Strengthens Governance
Devon Energy Corp., headquartered in Oklahoma City, announced that Brent J. Smolik has joined its Board of Directors effective October 1, 2025. Smolik, 64, brings more than four decades of experience in the oil and gas industry, having held leadership positions at some of the sector’s most recognized companies.
Clay Gaspar, president and CEO of Devon, welcomed the appointment.
“We are pleased to welcome Brent Smolik to our Board of Directors. His leadership and strategic insight will be instrumental as we continue to deliver value to our shareholders,” Gaspar said.
A Career Built in Energy Leadership
Smolik previously served as president and chief operating officer of Noble Energy, a role he held until the company merged with Chevron in 2020. Before that, he was president, CEO, and chairman of EP Energy Corporation.
His extensive background also includes senior executive positions at Noble Midstream Partners LP, El Paso Corporation, ConocoPhillips, and Burlington Resources. Beyond his executive roles, Smolik has served on the boards of Marathon Oil Corporation, Noble Midstream Partners LP, Cameron International, and Encino Acquisition Partners.
John Bethancourt, chair of Devon’s board, highlighted the value of Smolik’s experience:
“Brent’s extensive experience, combined with his operational and technical expertise in the oil and gas industry, will be valuable as we guide the company into the future. His proven track record in both upstream and midstream sectors, as well as his prior service on multiple public company boards, will provide important perspective.”
Independent Appointment and Committee Assignments
Devon’s board determined Smolik is independent under company guidelines. He has been appointed to three committees:
-
Audit
-
Safety, Operations, and Resources
With his appointment, Devon’s board now totals 11 members, with 10 classified as independent directors.
Why It Matters for Devon Energy
The addition of Smolik reflects Devon’s focus on governance and operational leadership during a period of rising U.S. energy demand. His experience across both upstream and midstream operations, coupled with a track record of guiding companies through mergers, acquisitions, and strategic transitions, positions him as a key figure in Devon’s future direction.
