Williams Cos. of Tulsa faces opposition for an expansion of another of its pipeline projects. It’s the Transco natural gas pipeline effort called the Southeast Suupply Enhancement Project.

The project would expand the existing capacity of the Transcontinental pipeline which runs nearly 10,000 miles from Texas to New York. The expansion would be from Virginia to the Carolinas, Georgia and Alabama.

Williams filed for federal approval in February of 2024 and did so at a time when the Biden administration announced a pause on approving future liquefied natural gas export projects.

At a recent town hall meeting in Kernersville, North Carolina, the project drew opposition from environmental advocates and residents. Some came from Virginia to voice their concerns.

WUNC Public Radio reported dozens of individuals spoke against the project, which if approved, would include 24 miles through what is known as the Triad. It is a metropolitan region in central North Carolina named for the three main anchor cities of Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point. It covers 12 counties and is described as a vital hub for manufacturing, distribution and growing industries.
