Oklahoma Rig Count Holds Steady

Oklahoma’s oil and gas rig count was unchanged this week, according to the latest Baker Hughes Rig Count. The state continues to record 42 active rigs in operation.

The Cana Woodford play remains the busiest area of drilling in the state, reporting 18 active rigs. The Granite Wash, which extends into the Texas Panhandle, followed with 15 rigs. Other plays included the Ardmore Woodford and Arkoma Woodford, each reporting one active rig. The Mississippian play, which reaches into southern Kansas, had no reported drilling activity.

National Rig Count Overview

Nationally, the Baker Hughes report showed mixed activity.

  • The Permian Basin rig count slipped by one, leaving 253 rigs.

  • The Eagle Ford play in South Texas increased by three rigs, totaling 45.

  • The Williston Basin remained steady at 29 rigs.

  • The Haynesville held at 39 rigs.

  • The D-J Basin in Colorado stayed at 11 rigs.

  • The Marcellus play also recorded no change.

Why the Rig Count Matters

The weekly rig count is a key indicator of exploration and production activity across the country. Oklahoma’s steady performance reflects consistent drilling in its most active plays, while changes in other basins highlight shifting priorities in U.S. oil and gas development.
