Some of the recent utility rate hikes made by Oklahoma utilities pale in comparison to the one proposed by El Paso Electric in southwest Texas.
It wants a $93 million rate hike that would skyrocket residential rates by an average of $22.39 a month, meaning additional costs of hundreds of dollars a year.
But the El Paso Times reported the city of El Paso is trying to block the big jump. The city council voted in June to deny the rate hike and the matter went to the Public Utilities Commission of Texas which held a hearing in August. It could be January before a final decision is made.
