Edmond Interchange to Carry Neal McCaleb’s Name

EDMOND, Okla. — A portion of Interstate 35 in Edmond will soon carry the name of Neal McCaleb, honoring his decades of work in transportation and public service.

This fall, the interchange of I-35 and East 33rd Street will officially be designated the “Ambassador Neal McCaleb Memorial Interchange.” The naming recognizes McCaleb’s contributions to Oklahoma, the Chickasaw Nation, and the United States.

Neal McCaleb’s Career Dedicated to Infrastructure and Service

McCaleb, who died January 7, served as Chickasaw Nation Ambassador At-Large and was a national voice for infrastructure investment. In January, the Transportation Revenues Used Strictly for Transportation (TRUST) coalition posthumously awarded him the Guardian of Transportation Award, which honors leaders who dedicate their lives to advancing Oklahoma’s surface transportation.

He was the ninth person to receive this recognition since the award was created.

Local and National Leadership

McCaleb lived in Edmond and worked for decades as a civil engineer. His early career included designing highways and bridges before he entered public service. Over the years, he held roles under three U.S. presidents and two Oklahoma governors, including service as Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Interior.

He was also a tireless advocate for First American sovereignty and expanded economic opportunities for tribal nations.

Praise From Leaders for Neal McCaleb

Former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating, TRUST co-chair, said the award reflects McCaleb’s lasting influence.

“This award goes to an individual who exemplifies excellence in all areas of the transportation industry,” Keating said.

McCaleb also led TRUST as president for 19 years, helping to shape statewide transportation policy and push for stronger investment in infrastructure.
