Nation’s latest oil spill is in North Dakota

North Dakota environmental officials are dealing with the aftermath of an oil spill involving an estimated 20,000 barrels of crude oil and produced water.

The State’s Department of Environmental Quality reported the spill came from a pipeline leak in the northwest part of North Dakota.

The oil and water spilled onto farm land near the town of Stanley located in Mountrail County. The pipeline is owned by Hess Corp. and investigators are unsure just how long the leak occurred before it was discovered.

A spokesman for the Environmental Quality Department indicated Hess became suspicious on September 2 when it “started getting an indication their numbers weren’t right.”
