Fermi plant proposal raises questions about water use in the Texas Panhandle

Fermi: $300B AI campus brings jobs, clean energy to Amarillo

What appears to be one of the more interesting data center and power plant proposals in the region is the Fermi Center at Amarillo, Texas.

It not only wants to use natural gas and solar power to provide the power, but also nuclear energy.

Proposed by Texas Tech and former U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry, the center is one of 130 such proposals in Texas. But it has also raised some serious questions about water use in the Panhandle, an area where water is precious for agriculture use.

As we’ve pointed out since Fermi made the announcement, the need for more electrical power is driven by a number of factors but data centers are a key reason.
