New Mexico state leaders are calling it a major win for the state—–chosen by a California-based nuclear fusion energy company to build a $1 billion research and manufacturing campus.

Pacific Fusion announced it chose Albuquerque’s Mesa del Sol as the site for the facility. The firm narrowed down the choice as Albuquerquer was in competition with California cities Livermore and Alameda.

New Mexico Economic Development Secretary Rob Black called it great to win in New Mexico.

“When you talk about fusion companies around the world, Pacific Fusion is one that a lot of people are betting will be successful in this technology race.”

Pacific Fusion’s co-founder and chief operating officer, Carrie von Muench said it means the firm can build on New Mexico’s leadership in applied physics innovation in order to advance clean energy technologies — in particular, fusion technologies — which are, in some ways, the holy grail of clean energy.”
