A proposed $1 billion wind farm that would have been located over 56,000 acres of Wyoming land was rejected this week by one county’s commissioners.
The Laramie County Board of Commissioners in Cheyenne rejected the Laramie Range Wind Project which had been backed by Spanish energy giant Repsol. the project would have covered an area three times the size of the city of Cheyenne.
Dozens of county residents spoke against the project before the commissioners voted 3-1 against it.
Repsol had made assurances the 170-wind turbines would have minimal effect on wildlife, including a reduction of the speed of the turbines to protect bats. It also planned to use camera technology to detect eagles flying near the turbines and shut down a turbine if an eagle were close. Repsol also agreed to relocate nine of the proposed turbines away from mule deer and antelope habitat.
