Just like Oklahoma regulators, those in Colorado are dealing with the boom in the construction of data centers, a boom that will create a demand for more electricity to power those operations.
One of the latest proposals to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission is Xcel Energy’s idea of spending $22 billion to meet the rising demand for more power. Xcel wants to add 12 to 14 GW of new generation and transmission.
Energy consumer activists are raising a lot of skepticism about the move and believe ratepayers will end up footing a lot of the bill. The Colorado Sun reports the Colorado Public Utilities Commission is already expressing skepticism about the forecast of Xcel Energy’s subsidiary Public Service of Colorado, or PSCo. The company expects to have a total demand of 8.5 GW by 2031.
