With hotter weather comes growing dryness in Oklahoma

Summer will be “roaring back” this week, proclaimed Oklahoma Mesonet Climatologist Gary McManus.

In a recent Mesonet posting, he observed how the state went from no abnormally dry areas to about 4%.

” Enough so that the amount of Abnormally Dry (D0) conditions on the U.S. Drought Monitor map for Oklahoma QUADRUPLED!!! Okay, from 1% to 4%, but it’s a thang,” he wrote in his usual manner.

Actually, 4.73%.

Three months ago, 33% of Oklahoma had abnormally dry areas, then it disappeared with the June rains that flooded the state. The good news is there is no “moderate drought,” no “severe drought,” no “extreme drought,” and no “exceptional drought” in Oklahoma. But recall, a year ago 22% of the state was in a “moderate drought” condition.

And the coming repeat of higher temperatures could have a say about dry conditions.
