Study says Oklahoma, Kansas and other SPP members need to do more for utility battery storage

If Oklahoma, Kansas and other states who are members of the Southwest Power Grid don’t do more quickly to invest in utility-level battery storage, utility rates could see an 80% jump warned a firm that studied electricity costs in the grid.

Aurora Energy Research was commissioned by the American Clean Power Association to review the battery storage situation and found it’s becoming a seriously challenged function of the electricity supplied throughout the 14-state grid.

We’re seeing a significant increase in demand for more power and we’re not building enough new resources to supply that power,”said Noah Roberts with the American Clean Powwer Association. “So as your margins get thinner and thinner over the next few years, over the next decade, it’s going to be increasinglymore expensive to produce that peak power that’s required on a day-to-day basis, because you’re stretching yourself very thin.”
