NextEra Energy wins FERC approval to restart nuclear power plant

While NextEra Energy is busy fighting Wagoner County Commissioners in court over their denial of the firm’s request to build a 5,000-solar farm, it’s attempting another big project, this one in Iowa.

NextEra just won approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for  a waiver request that will allow NextEra Energy to restart the Duane Arnold nuclear power plant in Iowa by the end of 2029.

The nuclear power plant near Cedar Rapids, Iowa was shuttered five years ago because of what was described as challenging economic conditions. NextEra has a 70% controlling interest in the plant while Central Iowa Power Cooperative and Corn Belt Power Cooperative own the remaining 30%.

In June, NextEra’s Persica Solar LLC was denied a permit by Wagoner County Commissioners to construct a solar farm near Porter. The company followed the denial with a challenge in district court.
