New Mexico Senator demands explanation over cancellation of loan to Grain Belt Express project

The Trump administration’s recent decision to cancel a nearly $5 billion federal loan guarantee for the Grain Belt Express transmission project from Kansas to Indiana caught the attention of one Democrat in the U.S. Senate.

New Mexico Sen. Martin Heinrich is the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and demands to know why the Energy Secretary Chris Wright and his agency terminated the loan. He wants to know why.

“The Department’s decision to abruptly terminate the conditional loan guarantee raises serious questions about the legality of the termination and this administration’s commitment to bringing down energy costs for millions of Americans,” Heinrich wrote in a letter to the Energy Secretary.

“Not only am I concerned that this move is illegal, but I am concerned that the federal government is eroding what little trust the private sector has in our ability to be reliable partners.”
