The governor of Missouri recently signed into law a law limiting large-scale water exports from Missouri such as into Oklahoma and Kansas.
The law goes into effect Aug. 28 and requires a permit as well as restricts withdrawals of water for export to within 30 miles of the state border.
Supporters called it a “forward-thinking” measure designed to protect one of the most vital resources in Missouri. The new law also requires annual reporting of water usage to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, something similar to a water reporting effort made in the recently-concluded Oklahoma legislature.
