A bridge to improvement. That’s what we could call it as Oklahoma has gone from 49th worst state in the nation for unsafe bridges with 1,200 structurally deficient bridges to fourth nationwide with only 35 bad bridges.
It’s what Transportation Department director Tim Gatz reported this week during a meeting of the Oklahoma Transportation commission.
“That is the highest ranking we have ever achieved,” he said in unveiling the 2025 Federal Highway Administration report. The 35 bridges equates to 0.52% of the bridges maintained by ODOT are considered structurally deficient. And they will be targets of improvement in the state’s eight-year construction plan.
