Google has a plan to keep its data centers from stressing the grid

While Oklahoma and other states deal with the impact of new data centers, they also are focused on the impact of the centers on the ability to produce more electricity.

Google, which recently announced plans to invest $9 billion in Oklahoma where it has one data center in Pryor and another under construction in Stillwater, is also revealing a plan to avoid putting more stress on the grids in those states. The stress could lead to higher energy costs for consumers.

A report by Canary Media stated that the Department of Energy reported last year that it could identify “no examples of grid-aware flexible operation at data centers” in the U.S. with one exception—-and that one exception is Google.

Google announced  agreements this month with Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) and Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), two utilities facing a lot of data center demand, that represent the first time we’re delivering data center demand response by targeting machine learning workloads.”
