The Trump administration’s recently announced campaign to recruit more air traffic controllers also raised another issue….a reported shortage of the people who instruct the recruits. The instruction takes place at the Federal Aviation Administration’s Mike Monroney training academy in Oklahoma City.
Looking into the issue, Bloomberg found out some instructors work from 7 in the morning until midnight and where they are forced to live isn’t in the best of neighborhoods in Oklahoma City. (near an infamous strip club).
Schedules obtained by Bloomberg News show a sharp rise in the number of double shifts required for instructors, most of whom who are employed by the federal contractor Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC), not by the FAA. They teach aviation basics, complex air-traffic scenarios and other courses during the recruits’ two months of training.
