The Southwest Power Pool’s Markets+ program just got another participant—Xcel Energy, Colorado’s biggest electricity provider.

Described as short-term, electricity wholesale market, it allows utilities outside the SPP’s 14-state grid, which includes Oklahoma, to join. In Xcel Energy’s case, it is spending $30 million to join the market.

Colorado Public Utilities Commissioners recently voted 2-1 to approve Xcel’s application. As discussed by the commissioners, the benefits to Xcel customers in Colorado will be minimal.

A report by the Colorado Sun indicated that nearly all of the utilities in Colorado are joining SPP West as full members of the regional transmission organization.
