$10 billion rate hike over next four years? It’s for real

Customers of Florida’s biggest utility company, Florida Power & Ligght Company are probably still picking themselves up off the floor after hearing what the firm is proposing for a rate hike.

FPL wants a nearly $10 billion rate hike for electricity over the next four years. If it comes about, it would be the largest utility hike in U.S. history, accoring to environmental advocates.

Florida Power & Light Company (FPL)is a subsidiary of Florida-based energy company NextEra Energy, and outlined the proposal in a petition filed in February with the Florida Public Service Commission, which regulates the state’s electric industry.

If regulators give their approval, the hike would be more than all of the hikes they made in 2023.
