More than 120,000 customers of a Kansas natural gas supplier are facing a nearly 9% hike in their monthly gas bills.

Black Hills Energy wants to increase the average residential bill by $5.96 a month. Several groups involved in the request reached a settlement agreement presented recently to the Kansas Corporation Commission.

Black Hills provides natural gas to 120,200 customers primarily in the southwest and south-central part of Kansas. The agreement lowered the utility’s original rate hike request of $12.8 million to$10.8 million. But combined with the Black Hills Gas System Reliability Surcharge of $4.4 million, which is already being collected from customers, will result in a $15.2 million rate increase if approved by regulators.
