Invenergy moving ahead with Grain Belt Express despite cancellation of $5 billion government loan guarantee

Despite the Trump administration’s announced cancellation of a nearly $5 billion federal loan guarantee for the Grain Belt Express transmission project, developer Invenergy says it’s moving forwarad with private financing.

The cancellation of the $4.9 billion federal loan guarantee came last week. Invenergy wants to build the large transmission line to carry wind-powered electricity from near Dodge City, Kansas and across Missouri and Illinois and into Indiana.

Missouri U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley was a major critic of the project and his stance was noted by the developer.

Invenergy’s response came in reaction to the Energy Department’s decision and declaration that “it is not critical for the federal government to have a role” in the first phase of the project. The federal agency also questioned whether the $11 billion project could meet financial conditions required for the loan guarantee, according to the Associated Press.
