Entergy Arkansas has unveiled plans for a new 754-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant in south central Arkansas, replacing a coal-fired plant that will stop burning coal in 2028.

The proposed Jefferson Power Station will replace the White Bluff power plant, known for having one of the tallest chimneys in the world at 1,001 feet. But it is also known for being ranked number 42 on Environment America’s list of the 100 dirtiest coal-fired power stations in the U.S., reporting that its 2011 emissions were equivalent to 2.16 million passenger vehicles.

Details of the project were made known earlier in the month when Entergy invited stakeholders to a virtual opoen house. The company intends to build the new plant on a 45-acre site.
