Lest you think our growing reports and observations about the ballooning demand for electricity from increasing data centers is something of a “Boy Cries Wolf,” consider what’s happening to the nation’s largest power grid.
PJM Interconnection covers 13 states from Illinois to Tennessee and Virginia to New Jersey but is reported to be under strain, thanks to the large number of data centers and AI chatbots consuming power faster than new plants can be built.
Reuters reported the growth and demand are so great, the governor of Pennsylvania is threatening to abandon the grid. Plus, electricity bills are expected to jump more than 20% this summer in the grid and the CEO of the grid has resigned and the chair of PJM’s board of managers and another board member were ousted in a vote.
