Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm’s call this week for an all-electric U.S. military drew a heavy critical response from Oklahoma U.S. Sen. Markwayne Mullin who called her idea “ridiculous.”
It was during a U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee hearing Wednesday where Granholm said that she supports efforts from the Biden administration to require the U.S. military to implement an all-electric vehicle fleet by 2030, telling lawmakers that she believes “we can get there.”
Granholm’s remarks came during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing following questions from Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, who asked the Biden administration official whether she supports the military’s adoption of an “EV fleet by 2030.”
In response to Granholm’s comments, Sen. Mullin told OK Energy Today in a statement, the role of the military is to deter war and ensure the nation’s security, not serve as a venue to promote Joe Biden’s liberal Green New Deal priorities.
“The idea that Biden would require our military, the strongest peacekeeping force on the planet, to run an all-electric fleet in the next seven years is ridiculous, and a completely misguided priority,” continued the Republican Senator who sits on the Armed Services Committee.
He further said Biden’s backwards EV plan would cost billions in taxpayer dollars and only increase U.S. reliance on China.
“Oklahomans know that so-called ‘environmental justice’ has zero place in the U.S. military. We cannot let this administration’s ‘woke’ green energy agenda distract us from true national security priorities. U.S. strength is essential for global stability, and our adversaries are watching,” stated Sen. Mullin.
