Crude oil prices managed a slight improvement on Tuesday as Nicholas, the short-lived hurricane that quickly turned into a rain-bearing tropical storm over Texas and Louisiana hit the Gulf states.
Damages to the U.S. energy infrastructure weren’t as extensive as those reported from Hurricane Ida earlier in September.
U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude for October delivery finished up one cent at $70.46 but earlier had reached a high of $71.22.
Global benchmark Brent crude managed a 9 cent increase to close at $73.60 after hitting a session high of $74.28 on ICE Futures Europe.
While storm damage to oil and natural gas production was not reported to be widespread, an estimated 39% of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico production was shut down on Tuesday according to the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement.
The trading on Tuesday left most Oklahoma energy stocks retreating for the day save for a few firms including LSB Industries where it recorded a more than 5% gain. Laredo Petroleum recorded the same amount for a loss.
