Oklahoma ranks poorly in clean jobs report

Oklahoma ranked 33rd in the sixth annual Clean Energy Jobs Report released this week, a report that also showed for the first time a drop in the number of overall jobs in the clean energy sector.

The report showed Oklahoma had 22,765 workers employed in the sector as of 2020 with 3,199 in renewables; 1,587 in grid and storage; 15,046 in energy efficiency; 909 in clean fuels; and 2,024 in clean vehicles.

Kansas ranked 32 and Arkansas 35. New Mexico ranked 45, Missouri  23 and Texas 2.

The annual report  stated that overall, clean energy jobs across the country grew by slightly more than two percent in 2019, slower than its nearly four percent growth in 2018. Jobs in renewable energy grew more than three percent, led in part by a rebound in solar jobs.

Clean energy storage and grid modernization jobs increased four percent—faster than any other sector—while clean vehicle employment declined by about two percent after a 17 percent jump in 2018.

The report showed clean energy jobs, 3.36 million outnumbered total fossil fuel employment, 1.19 million by more than 3 to one in 2019. It stated that renewable generation employed nearly 2.5 times more workers than fossil fuel electric power generation.

The report is published by E2 (Environmental Entrepreneurs) which is a national, nonpartisan group of business leaders, investors and professionals from different sectors of the economy.
