Cheniere implements expansion of its Corpus Christi export plant

Cheniere Energy has officially expanded its Corpus Christi, Texas liquefied natural gas export plant with the arrival of a third train.

The Houston company, which obtains some of its natural gas from Oklahoma’s STACK and SCOOP plays, announced the implementation this week of Train 3 which recently was authorized by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Train 3 has the capacity to produce 0.66 billion cubic feet a day of natural gas. It means the U.S. LNG export potential could potentially increase to 11.9 bcfd in 2022, up from the 10.5 bcfd currently produced.

Cheniere sanctioned Train 3 in 2018 and expected in 2019 it would be service by the first half of 2021. Train 3 has a capacity of 5 million tons a year.

Commissioning is complete and Cheniere’s EPC partner Bechtel Oil, Gas and Chemicals, Inc. has turned over care, custody, and control of Train 3 to Cheniere.

Cheniere, its subsidiaries, and Bechtel have now declared Substantial Completion on a total of eight liquefaction trains at the Corpus Christi liquefaction project and the Sabine Pass liquefaction project ahead of each train’s guaranteed completion date and within project budgets.
