Hundreds evacuated after train derailment in SE Texas

An estimated 600 people were evacuated early Thursday morning following the derailment of 25 cars of a train in the southeast Texas community of Mauriceville.

The derailment happened about 100 miles east of Houston and at least 15 of the derailed cars were loaded with chemical products. The Orange Leader reported that four of the cars leaded a petroleum product but it was not considered to be a risk to residents.

A fifth car leaked a corrosive product which was contained by emergency responders. As a result, residents, businesses and schools located within a mile of the derailment were evacuated.

No injuries were reported.
