Quakes shake northern and eastern Oklahoma and central Kansas

Earthquakes shook northern and southeastern Oklahoma and south-central Kansas Saturday night and Sunday morning. The strongest was a 3.2 magnitude quake Saturday night near Hutchinson, Kansas, strong enough to be felt by residents in the north central Kansas city of Concordia.

The U.S Geological Survey reports no significant damage was reported.

A 3.0 magnitude earthquake happened Sunday around one a.m. near the northern Oklahoma town of Fairview. About 30 minutes later, a 2.6 magnitude quake hit the southeast town of Quinton which is south of McAlester.

Earlier on Saturday at 4:25 in the afternoon, a 2.7 magnitude quake was recorded near Waukomis in northern Oklahoma.

The regions in Kansas have been the site of oil and gas drilling operations.  In northern Oklahoma, wastewater disposal well operations have been curtailed as the Oklahoma Corporation Commission investigated the surge in earthquakes in the past several years.

The site around Quinton has seen gas-drilling operations.
