Number of strong earthquakes in Oklahoma is on the decline again

The number of strong earthquakes in Oklahoma is on the decline and the state might see a fourth straight year of fewer quakes measuring 3.0 or greater in magnitude.

There have been 27 earthquakes of 3.0 or greater in the first half of the year, according to a report by the Tulsa World.

Residents of Medford might have a slightly different opinion since an earthquake in May measured 4.5 magnitude which tied for Oklahoma’s 13th largest ever.

Nonetheless, the number of strong quakes overall has dropped and the 27 quakes measuring 3.0 or stronger is 72% fewer than early July of last year.  The World says the number is also 433% fewer than 2017 when there were 144 quakes that measured 3.0 magnitude or greater.
