OKC to consider moving toward more LED street lights

The city council in Oklahoma City will vote Tuesday on an agreement with Oklahoma Gas and Electric to convert to LED street lights.

The estimated cost is $3.3 million to $3.9 million a year.

“With the introduction of LED lights, OGE has asked the city to make a choice regarding City-owned lights,” explained City Manager Craig Freeman in a memo to the city council. “The choice is to elect for the city to maintain the city-owned streetlights or to continue with OGE maintaining the lights and switch them to LED fixtures.”

Under the second option, the new fixture would be owned by OGE while the pole and special wiring would belong to the city.

He explained the conversion to LED lights has also led to a new rate schedule on how streetlights should be billed to municipalities.

“OGE plans to have all streetlights replaced with LEDs in about five years. It will take upwards of 30 years to replace all poles,” said Freeman in the memo.
