Xcel Energy wraps up purchase to make major wind farm expansion in West Texas and New Mexico

Xcel Energy is moving quickly ahead on its massive wind farm expansion in far West Texas and southeast New Mexico.

The company finalized its purchase this week of the Hale Wind project from NextEra Energy Resources near Plainview, Texas. It means Xcel will be able to start construction of the new project that will span several counties in the two states.

A new 522 megawatt wind farm in Roosevelt County in Texas is part of the project. The expansion will eventually supply 1,230 megawatts to Xcel’s Texas and New Mexico customers for more than 30 years.

Xcel maintains the wind farms will save an estimated $2 billion in energy costs for its consumers.
