Testing of OKC Downtown StreetCar System Begins

Oklahoma City’s “New-Old” style of transportation—streetcars—is about six months away from being put into service. Testing of the system started this week on a 2.3 mile loop connecting Bricktown with Chesapeake Energy Arena as well as a new convention center complex and the Myriad Gardens.

City crews and others working on the $132 million system began trials by using a “clearance” car to make sure trees are trimmed along the path and other objects removed.  On Thursday, a truck will put the first streetcar along the circuit.

The trials are expected to be carried out over a six-month period with actual streetcar service going into effect in December. Eventually, a longer loop throughout the downtown area will be finished.

The Bricktown loop was finished on time by construction contractor Herzon/Stacy and Witbeck. It will be October before the downtown loop is finished.
