Oil Rig Count Holds Steady Across the U.S. and Slips in Oklahoma

The nation and Oklahoma saw little slack in oil and gas exploration during Christmas as the nation’s rig count grew by one to reach 931 while Oklahoma dropped by one to 120.

Figures from Baker Hughes Co. and the Red Top Rig Report in Kansas indicated the national count showed the number of oil rigs held steady at 747 in the past week while gas rigs grew by one to reach 184.

In the past year, the U.S. rig count grew by 278 from 653 reported one year ago. In the past 12 months, there has been an increase of 224 more oil rigs and 55 additional gas rigs.

Canada’s rig count fell by 28 in the past week to 210.

While Oklahoma’s weekly rig count slipped by one to 120, the count in Texas slipped by two to reach 455. New Mexico added four to reach 75. Kansas dropped 3 to hit 31. Colorado remained at 33 and Louisiana stayed at 62. The count in North Dakota grew by one to reach 48.

Of the oil plays, the Woodfords in Oklahoma remained at 9 and the Eagle Ford in south Texas stayed at 70. The Granite Wash in Oklahoma was steady at 12 but the Mississippian dropped one to hit three.

The Permian in Texas and New Mexico added one and reached 398.
