Work Resumes on One of New Mexico’s Largest Wind Farms

Work has resumed on a stalled $500 million wind farm in central New Mexico. The 56,000-acre project will eventually have ore than 140 wind turbines with the capability of providing electricity to more than 200,000 homes.

Billed as one of New Mexico’s largest wind farms, work on the farm by Avangrid Renewables actually began in 2013. Foundations are being poured in the complex that will span nearly 90 square miles of private property and state trust land in Torrance County.

Work slowed last year while transmission-related matters were handled. Avangrid is considered to be one of the largest power utilities in the U.S. and was formed out of the merger of Iberdrola USA and UIL Holdings Corporation.

Energy experts say the state has the potential to produce more electricity from wind than what the population could consume, meaning some of the electricity could be exported.
