Damage totals are estimated at a range of $85 million to $200 million from the Grand River Dam Authority fire that occurred on July 1, according to the Tulsa World.

The damaged area involves the main generating facility which will require replacement of the Chouteau facility’s largest coal-fired unit.

“The turbine is the question,” said Justin Alberty, a spokesman for the GRDA. “We’re still looking through that.”

Alberty indicated that insurance will cover most of the costs associated with the fire, which was likely caused by lightning which struck the cooling unit pump for Unit 2 resulting in an overheating episode.

GRDA recently completed an $86 million environmental upgrade to the 30-year-old plant, according to the Tulsa World report.

The GRDA will complete thorough inspections of both units within one month.
