Another Pig Poop to Electricity Deal’s Announced

Updating a story we recently told you about concerning electricity from “pig poop,” Duke Energy Corp. in North Carolina has signed another deal to create electricity from the pig waste.

Considered the nation’s largest electric company, Duke Energy said the deal is to collect methane gas from the animal waste and convert it into fuel for two of its power plants.

The Charlotte-based utility said it’s a 15 year deal with Wilmington-based Optima KV and the poop to electricity agree will power about 880 homes a year. Duke is also following North Carolina laws that require electric utilities to begin generating some of their power from swine ad poultry waste. North Carolina is the nation’s second-largest pork producing state.
