Albuquerque Considers Pledge of 25% Electricity from Solar Power

albuquerquesolarThe City of Albuquerque, New Mexico is considering a move to joint other communities in setting goals to acquire more electricity from renewable resources including solar production.

The City council voted recently to delay a decision for two weeks on a resolution to get at least 25 percent of the electricity from solar power by 2025. Some council members expressed concerns about locking into solar power before learning how such a move would affect the city’s budget.

New Mexico is a state that has 300-plus days of sunshine a year. But the two city council members who introduced the resolution admit they too don’t know how much a solar power pledge would cost the city.

“With the cost of solar coming down every day, we don’t know what the best strategy for us is,” said Pat Davis. “But the city owns a lot of acreage of rooftops and we own a lot of open space.”

Davis and the other council say the solar pledge could serve as an inspiration along with saving the city money, according to a report by the Associated Press.
