Crafty Oil Thieves in Mexico

It’s not just drug lords you have to worry about in Mexico, but ingenious oil thieves too. In central Mexico, police have discovered just how crafty the thieves were as they tapped into government oil pipelines. They built a camouflage truck to haul their stolen oil and used a tunnel in central Mexico.

The travel truck had a huge fuel tank welded into the bed and it was covered by a hatch and a layer of gravel to avoid detection. Government authorities say thieves drill taps into state-owned pipelines thousands of times a year to steal gasoline and diesel fuel.

Earlier this month, police discovered a 15-yard long tunnel built under the fuel pipelines. It allowed thieves to drive a truck under the pipelines and collect the fuel.
