Nation’s Rig Count Drops by 9 while Oklahoma Remains Unchanged

The nation’s oil and gas rig count declined by another 9 in the past week while the count in Oklahoma and many surround energy-producing states remained unchanged.

The national count fell to 431 with 8 fewer oil rigs and one less gas rig. The oil count fell to 343 while the gas rig count slipped to 88. That puts the national rig count down 501 from the 932 reported one year ago. Over the past year, the nation has lost 360 oil rigs and 137 gas rigs.

This week’s offshore rig count declined by 2 to reach 26. In Canada, the count was unchanged at 40 rigs.

Of some of the energy producing states, Colorado was unchanged at 17. Kansas remained at six and New Mexico was unchanged at 19. North Dakota remained at 26, same as last week. Louisiana lost one rig to drop to 47. The rig count in Texas dropped by seven to hit 187 compared to the 393 reported a year ago.

Oklahoma’s count of 63 this week compared to 115 last year at this time.

Of the various oil plays, the Mississippian in northern Oklahoma and southern Kansas remained at 4 compared to the 29 last year at this time. The Granite Wash was unchanged at 4 while a year ago, the play had 18 active oil and gas rigs.

The Woodfords remained at 5 while the Permian Basin in west Texas, the nation’s most active oil and gas play dropped 5 rigs to hit 136, That’s exactly 100 fewer than a year ago at this time.
