Northwest Arkansas could be getting two new gas power plants in the future, courtesy of SWEPCO (Southwestern Electric Power Company), the state’s second-largest utility. It’s also another sign of the growing need for more electricity generation.
SWEPCO electric grid planners recently offered some details in a presentation at a virtual conference held by the Southwest Power Pool. But they also want authority from Arkansas regulators for a rate hike to keep open the company’s Flinlt Creek Coal plant near Gentry until 2038.
SWEPCO has run into opposition on some of the projects. The Arkansas Times reports the city of Fayetteville, the Sierra Club and the Delta Audubon Society oppose the proposal, contending the utility should put more money into solar and wind power projects.
