Small drop in oil and gas rig numbers in Oklahoma’s plays

Despite a drop of two drilling rigs in the past week, Oklahoma’s oilfield activity remained strong.

Baker Hughes, in its most recent rig report, showed a decline only in the Granite Wash play where the decline of one rig left 13 others still active.

The Cana Woodford added a rig to reach 21 for the week. The Ardmore Woodford remained at 3 rigs and the Arkoma Woodford stayed at one rig.

In a surprise, the Mississippian had one active rig, according to Baker Hughes. The Mississippian had gone several months with no recorded drilling activity, at least based on the weekly Baker Hughes rig count reports. The last report showed Oklahoma with 47 active oil and gas rigs compared to 35 one year earlier.

Across the nation, the Permian Basin, the largest oil and gas play in the U.S. saw its rig total decline by two to 271. The Williston remained at 31. The Haynesville count grew by one to 36 rigs and the Eagle Ford also added a rig for a total of 41.

The Utica was unchanged at 12 rigs and the Marcellus remained at 24. The D-J Basin count jumped 3 for a total of 8 rigs. The Barnett stayed at two rigs.
