Oklahoma’s rare minerals development catches world’s attention

This week’s announcement by Westwin Elements of obtaining a long-term contract for its refining of Nickel at a facility in Lawton had a global impact. One publication suggested Oklahoma is a leader in the rare minerals production and competition with China.

Certainly, it drew the attention of at least one worldwide media group which headlined the story, “Rural Oklahoma aims to become a hub of critical minerals processing in the United States.”

“Oklahoma’s move into mineral processing is an unexpected turn in the country’s effort to wean itself from Chinese rivals that have blocked exports,” reported World Energy News.

“Oklahoma has the only nickel refinery in the United States, as well as its largest lithium refinery and two lithium-ion batteries recycling plants. It also has a rare earths magnetic facility and several electronic waste collections facilities,” added the report.
