Sixty-nine highschoolers from across rural Oklahoma towns returned from a weeklong, all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. sponsored by local electric cooperatives in Oklahoma.
In following a longtime tradition that spans decades, the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives (OAEC) which represents 30 co-ops in Oklahoma – in coordination with the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association – hold the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour each year.
This year, more than 2,000 youth delegates, chaperones and staff from 44 states experienced the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The experience is designed to expose young people to their nation’s rich history and American democracy while also educating young leaders about the cooperative business model.
Students spent 6 days at the nation’s capital visiting landmarks, museums, the White House and spent a day on Capitol Hill where they met with Oklahoma’s congressional staff from Senator James Lankford, Senator Markwayne Mullin and Congressman Frank Lucas’ offices.
Students also had the unique opportunity to enjoy a private tour of the Capitol with Senator Markwayne Mullin.
“Electric cooperatives deeply care about their communities, and it shows in their investment in the next generation of leaders,” said Nicki Fuller, OAEC General Manager/CEO. “These young people will drive innovation and economic prosperity across our state, ensuring quality of life for future generations. We are grateful for the opportunity to invest in their leadership skills through this fantastic opportunity.”
